Trapped within a wooden birdcage, 300 rice LEDs on copper wire entangle two gold-leaf embellished pocket-size books. Photos show a first installation directly fixed as a ceiling light (non-UL) and a second installation suspended as a pendant.

The cage is the idea of the skull, or social constructs and other preconceptions containing the brain and constraining our thought. The LEDs illuminate themselves and others, representing synapses frozen while they fire. The books are the more coherent ideas forming and flying out of the cage of the head, or not, as some ideas escape and some fade and disappear. My wife found these pocket-sized books at a vintage shop, one was titled something like “A Father’s Love” and I had to cover it up with gold metal leaf.
