Falling Star chandelier

Falling Star

Additional information

Dimensions 36 × 24 × 48 in

1950's era chandelier, with a ground and clear coated steel frame to increase the shininess. Original glass and numerous handcrafted glass beads from Côte d'Ivoire are set out from the frame as if the chandelier is exploding from within as it appears to fall to Earth. The suspension chain is welded together to represent its sudden release from above, and the blue-rayon wrapped electrical wire, powering the 6 dimmable LEDs, is frozen in time as it whips out of the ceiling above. The underside of the arch suspending the chandelier has been painted in a simple and whimsical representation of the night sky.

I picked this steel framed glass chandelier from a rehab project in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 2019. The home had served a single family since the early 20th century. The bronze painted steel had turned brown, and the glass was caked in over 50 years of cigarette smoke, which I soaked in dish soap for 3 days. The bronze paint I ground off, leaving multifaceted grinder marks to reflect more light than bronze paint ever could. Linda, my wife was always an avid reader and loved libraries. Having her own reading room was something she always wished for and in 2021 we converted our 1200 square foot attic to a library for her to house her more than 9,000 books. As children, we always wished on meteors, or falling stars. Here we are.
