While they do help maintain order on a shelf, bookends can also represent a punctuation in a line of thought. All of our stories, fiction and non, happen within some form of existence and the bookend does more than keep things from falling over in the literary universe. When selected with an eye towards meaning, they can punctuate with subconscious emphasis. In these cases, both illumination and darkness are represented in the beginnings and endings of the worlds within our books.
