Steel roots, trunk and branches, partially clad in resin-coated wood-beetle eaten chestnut, with translucent mica leaves descend from the ceiling. The winding steel branches are loosely attached to the trunk and respond to air movement in the room. Soft light is provided by approximately 8' of 24 volt warm light LED strips mounted on top of the trunk, out of view of diners in the room, bouncing the light off the ceiling and through the mica leaves below. The total light output available is roughly equivalent to a 150 watt incandescent, and is modulated by a dimmer and 24 volt power supply running on house power and hidden in the wall.

The steel, mica and LEDs were all “new”, (as much as iron, carbon and silicate can be new), however, the chestnut barn wood stood somewhere in rural Massachusetts, having briefly nourished wood boring beetles, until the barn was demolished in 2021. I found the wood by accident. I had located a beautiful and reasonably priced 1985 Rockwell table saw in Florence, MA and decided to collect it in spite of my being in atrial fibrillation that afternoon. My heart had calmed into rhythm somewhat by the time I got to the seller’s shop, but lifting the 200-300 pound saw into the truck was too much and I was faint and having cold sweats. Then the seller said “Hey, do you want this barn wood for free?” 300 more pounds hefted into the truck and I waited in the hospital parking lot for 30 minutes to see if I needed to walk into the ED. I am an idiot. Nice chandelier though. Life, indeed.
